I’m not a fan of 2016’s The Girl on the Train. I had a lot of problems with that movie but this version manages to be worse than the original.
The Girl on the Train follows Mira Kapoor, a divorced lawyer struggling with alcoholism who boards the train and looks through the window at the couple’s lives. One day she notices something shocking leading her down a dark path.
I may not have liked the 2016 movie but this version makes that movie look like a masterpiece. I don’t even know where to begin with this disaster of a movie. At first I hated the structure of this movie. I didn’t like the 2016 setting either but at least it gave the characters some depth and kept a dark tone throughout. The narrative here is pretty messed up. Characters are barely developed here and the changes made by Ribhu Dasgupta were completely unnecessary. The addition of new characters and subplots is poorly executed. There were a lot of sequences down to the smallest details that didn’t
make sense. There is a scene where Parineeti Chopra is talking in a Hindi support group which makes no sense as there are people of other nationalities around her how can they understand what she is saying. Even the way they use phones looks so fake. If you are familiar with WhatsApp’s GUI, you will know how fake the interface looks in the movie. It takes little effort to use the real one, so why waste time creating a fake one? It’s details like this that annoy me the most.
The actors had no chance to guess how bad the script was. Parineeti Chopra tried but ultimately failed. Emily Blunt brings a level of subtlety to the role that makes it realistic. Chopra ends up being
too dramatic and borderline cartoonish. Aditi Rao Hydari is wasted due to the lack of development in her character and the same can be said about all the male roles. Kirti Kulhari is also underused. The script is full of horribly written dialogues that avoid seriousness and unintentional laughs. Just like the 2016 movie, this movie is also very boring and lacks suspense which is unfortunate considering it is a thriller.
Ribhu Dasgupta’s Girl on the Train is an absolute mess. There is so much wrong with this movie that I’m struggling to think of anything positive. It’s filled with poorly developed characters, plot points that don’t make any sense, and no interesting elements. Was it necessary to remake this story in India? I don’t know but all I can say is this movie is an absolute failure.
