The film is essentially a small film dealing with Bhavar Paratap Singh (Avinash Dhyani) who has left everything in search of his father who is presumed dead in his expedition while exploring an avalanche, but accidentally Savi Malhotra (Sanskriti Bhatt) meets who is coming for her destination wedding in Harsil. The plot of the complicated drama continues with their struggle to find Bhavar’s father and how they eventually fall in love with each other in their journey. Incidentally, this film is Avinash Dhyani’s third film after his earlier outings- 72 Hours (2019). and Saumya Ganesh (2020) and Sanskriti Bhatt’s second film after Saumya Ganesh.
At the outset I must say that the film Sumeru is actually a poem on celluloid and a beautiful love story shot in exotic locations of Dehradun, Harsil, Mussoorie and Dhanaulti in Uttarakhand. It is true that the film sometimes becomes static and there is no more plot to be explored with the protagonists trekking through the forest as well as avalanches until your feet hurt where you will definitely feel bored and stagnant, but as and when the film gets a thrill, it is only because of the way writer-cum-director-cum-actor Avinash Dhyani tackles the complex love story with finesse, even though the producer hiding in the director exploits the potential of the film have by juxtaposing it by blatantly pairing products like Maggie. Noodles and Surat-based Kalamandir jewellers, thus annoying the audiences who are otherwise engrossed in the proceedings in the film.

Avinash Dhyani’s story and screenplay are as ordinary as ordinary can be. Novelty is conspicuous by its absence. Since the drama moves at a single track, monotony sets in quite early. The proceedings simply fail to engage the viewers, due in no small part to the protagonists (Avinash Dhyani and Sanskriti Bhatt) who lack the looks of lead actors. Avinash Dhyani’s dialogues are dull.
Avinash Dhyani (as Bhavar Pratap Singh) neither looks like a hero nor acts like one. Sanskriti Bhatt (as Savi Malhotra) performs reasonably well but is not heroine material. Shagufta Ali lends good support as Shamaira. Suruchi Saklani is so-so like Roshni. Megha Joshi does an ordinary job as Shanaya. Abhishek Maindola, Arvind Panwar, Jeet Maila Gurung, Prashil Rawat, Satish Sharma, Bhumesh Bharti, Vimla Dhaundiyal and Madhvendra Rawat provide routine support.
Avinash Dhyani’s direction is no better than his sleazy screenplay. Sunjoy Bose’s music is below the mark. Lyrics (Rishi Raj Bhatt, Rishika Mishra, Vinay Joshi, Vijay Bhatt and Nishant Mishra) are nothing to shout about. Amit V. Kapoor’s background score is functional. Harish Negi’s camera work is fair. Locations are good. Deepak Rawat’s art direction is mundane. Editing (Mohit Kumar) should have been sharper.
Overall, Sumeru is a flop show.
