Set in a small town in North India, the film comes off as a derivative, generic drama that is afraid to go beyond the clichés associated with the genre.
Going by the trailer, one would think that writer-director Ssaurabh Tyagi’s drama Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? Inspired by the meme that went viral when someone wrote “Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai” for Rs. 10 dollar bill and caught the attention of social media. But this film has nothing to do with that event. It’s there, but it just comes and goes without affecting the main plot in any way. Even if Tyagi had removed this scene from the movie, it would have made no difference to the story.
26-year-old Sintoo (Jassie Gill), who, according to fortune telling, is destined to become a famous and successful man, spends his days chasing his dream girl Sonam Gupta (Surbhi Jyoti) on a bicycle with his friend. His father (Atul Srivastava) owns a shop and wants him to focus on business.
The setting is very familiar. A small town in Northern India, a sly guy who tries to trick a girl out of his organization, a distraught father, a disillusioned sister, and one unemployed and seemingly empty friend. life and just spends his time riding with our protagonist on his bike. Everything comes across as an unedited version of what we have seen in many Hindi films over the past few years.
Mostly, Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? It comes across as a derivative, generic drama set in a small North Indian town that is too afraid to step outside of the clichés associated with the genre. Only in the last 40 minutes, when our aimless protagonist Sintoo tries to get his life back on track, does the film stand out. The second half has a wonderful moment that will tug at your heartstrings. The film also makes a risky choice towards the end, but by then it’s too late.
Every romantic interaction of the two leads is followed by songs that hinder the pace of the film and do not allow the dynamic changes of their relationship and their character arcs to be emphasized. It’s like seeing them grow from strangers to friends and then a couple through a series of montages instead of proper, well-written scenes.
Another thing missing from the film are those snappy, funny one-liners that will get at least a few chuckles. Unpleasant dialogues even undercut scenes that could have caused laughter.
The games are also very average. Jassie Gill struggles to convey her character’s dilemma. While watching the film, one cannot shake the feeling that the way he plays seems to be based on other things we have seen in films of this type. His limitations as an actor are emphasized more in emotional scenes.
Surbhi Jyoti, despite playing the female lead, has nothing to do in the film. Even after the film ends, we feel like we don’t know his character. Atul Srivastav and Vijay Raaz also deliver strong performances despite having little screen time.

Set in the small town of Bareilly, this fictional film is an interesting tale, based on true events. Well, in early 2016, social media was flooded with pictures of a few banknotes marked with a note in green ink, “Sonam Gupta ‘bewafa hai’ (Sonam Gupta is untrustworthy).” The tone of the message clearly echoes the voice of the estranged lover, but the film is not yet another revenge saga.
The film stars Jassie Gill who plays Sintu the passionate lover, the downtrodden son of his middle class parents (Atul Srivastav and Vibha Chibber). He is a little reserved when it comes to his ambitions and routine. Although he was twenty-eight years old and twelve passed, his mother is interested in marrying a fair, rich, smart and formidable girl.
Unbeknownst to his mother, Sintu starts dating Sonam Gupta (Surbhi Jyoti) a student from his neighborhood. The only daughter of her parents (Rajendra Kala and Neelu Kohli), Sonam is a smart and conniving lass, who makes Sintu believe that she loves him too. And pretending that her parents don’t accept her request, she begs Sintu to talk to her. Predictably, at the appointed time he does not appear, which leads Humanity to believe that he is untrustworthy. How he copes with life, forms the crux of the story.
While Sintu’s character is well-rounded and well-rounded, Sonam’s is poorly written and one-dimensional. Again, the plot moves on an even keel, lacking in dramatic timing. The exciting times are also low key and fail. But even so, to nail the word, the “big” film smoothly and boldly tackles a sensitive subject that is perhaps rarely seen in Hindi Cinema, where it is used in a condescending manner.
While, both Jassie Gill and Surbhi Jyothi do their parts convincingly, it is the supporting actors who steal the show. The look on Mr. Gupta’s face doubting his daughter’s intentions to marry Sintu, when he told her, is worth mentioning.
Vijay Raaz in a flat role as the moneylender Sanjeev Naagral, is unremarkable and Surekha Sikri as Sintu’s Dadi is wasted.
On the directorial front, there are a few jerky moments in the film and visually too, it has a continuity problem.
Overall, the film despite its flaws is a film that grows on you.
