Small-budget films should be encouraged and supported, because they have to deal with a lot more bottlenecks than other filmmakers, and despite that they often end up making better films than famous directors who make major big-budget films. Unfortunately, this movie is not.
Condom use is virtually non-existent in India, and our population is gradually approaching that of China, who currently tops the board. Sex is a basic need and natural desire of every human being and yet we do not have any kind of sex education in our country. We all do it but don’t want to talk about it. So the premise of the movie is good, but what they’ve created is something that comes across as half-baked and lacks punch.
Every time Minus, played by Ashish Verma, spoke, I felt like stopping a movie. How could someone think they can make anyone laugh? Every dialogue of ‘Minus’ was so annoying and made me regret watching this movie. Fortunately after a while, the actor largely fell silent, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered to finish this movie. As far as acting was concerned, there was little or no scope for anyone to display their acting skills. Technically Pranautan Bahl was the lead actress in the film, but her role was nothing more than an extended cameo and even then she was a complete disappointment. Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee can do a lot better than they did in ‘Helmet’, especially Abhishek Banerjee, who I feel is a special talent but remains criminally untapped.
Helmet describes itself as a comedy but doesn’t have a lot of humor to support this theory. There are a few jokes here and there, but that’s about it. The content is light, but it’s not really attractive. You can watch this movie while checking your phone, which is not something that will make writers feel very proud of their work. The social commentary and messages they do in the movie are fine, but if it had been incorporated into a better screenplay, and had some good dialogue, Helmet could have been a much better movie.
